How to Measure a Tanning Ledge for In-Pool Furniture

Picture two comfortable seats, a cool drink within reach and a ledge you can enjoy without squeezing past the furniture. Start with two things: the water depth where each piece will sit, and the usable space around it. A few measurements now make choosing much easier.

A tanning ledge, sun shelf and Baja shelf are common names for the shallow lounging area of a pool. If you are looking for an in-pool chaise lounge, start with the actual measurements rather than the name on your pool plan.

How Deep Should the Water Be on a Tanning Ledge?

There is no single ideal depth for every tanning ledge. The right depth depends on how you want to use the space and which furniture will sit there. Measure the normal water depth at the exact placement before choosing a product—an inch can change which seating is appropriate.

• Flat 0–9 inches, reclined relaxation: Signature Chaise
• Flat 0–9 inches, upright conversation, reading, or supervision: Signature Chair

Which in-pool lounger works in 12 inches of water?

For a flat sun shelf with 12 inches of water, both chaises work without a riser:

• Autograph Chaise — 70″ long × 23″ wide; rated for water up to 12″ deep.
• Signature Chaise Deep — 74″ long × 23″ wide; rated for water up to 15″ deep.

These are overall dimensions; leave room to move around. If any depth reading exceeds 12″, choose Deep within its 15″ limit.

What you need

Gather:

• a rigid measuring tool long enough for the expected water depth;
• a tape measure for usable ledge length and width;
• the worksheet below or another way to record five readings;
• a way to mark the complete area where the furniture would sit;
• the pool at its normal operating water level.

Do not rely on a pool plan, coping height, photograph, memory, or a general “tanning ledge depth.” None proves the normal water depth at the exact placement.

1. Mark the exact placement

Identify the full area where the furniture would sit—not only the easiest spot to reach.

Confirm that the placement appears flat across the full area. A slope, step, edge, or transition is not the same as a flat placement.

If the placement is not clearly flat, stop. Do not choose from a photograph or one convenient reading. Contact Personal Product Guidance.

2. Take several normal-depth readings

With the pool at its normal operating water level, measure vertically from the ledge surface to the waterline.

Take at least five readings:

1. front-left;
2. front-right;
3. center;
4. rear-left;
5. rear-right.

Record every reading. Do not average or round readings to make them fit a product range. The minimum and maximum show whether the complete placement stays inside one supported band.

3. Know when to stop

Stop before choosing a product if:

• the surface slopes or includes a step or transition;
• the surface or normal waterline is unclear;
• readings fall outside the selected product’s supported depth range;
• you are choosing a Signature Chair above 9 inches and its exact Chair Riser configuration is unresolved;
• readings span two Signature Chair Riser labels;
• you are choosing a Signature Chair Riser, a reading is exactly 12, 15, or 18 inches, and the correct Riser label is unresolved;

• One comfortable recline: the standard Signature Chaise has a fixed shape for flat ledges in 0–9 inches of water.
• Different positions through the day: the Signature ARC adjustable in-pool chaise offers three backrest positions. The chaise by itself is for a flat ledge with no more than 9 inches of water; adjusting the back does not increase that limit. Allow room for its changing profile.

4. Match depth, then choose posture

Proceed only when every relevant reading stays within one supported range on a flat placement. Then choose how you want to sit.

Flat 0–9 inches + reclined: Signature Chaise

The Signature Chaise is a reclined option when every relevant reading is from 0 through 9 inches.

Verified dimensions are 70 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 22 inches high, with a 44-inch footprint. It weighs 34 pounds empty and 144 pounds filled.

The offer is one selected Signature Chaise. Lifestyle images may show multiple chaises, pillows, or a side table; images do not establish what is included. Depth fit also does not prove the chaise fits the usable flat area.

Flat 0–9 inches + upright: Signature Chair

The Signature Chair is the upright, high-back option when every relevant reading is from 0 through 9 inches.

Verified dimensions are 43.5 by 20 by 36.5 inches, with a 34.5-inch footprint. It weighs 33 pounds empty and 133 pounds filled.

Choose this path for upright seating—not because the Chair appears to be a smaller chaise. One Signature Chair is included. The Riser, shade, pillows, and other accessories are separate.

Flat ledges up to 15 inches + fixed recline: Signature Chaise Deep

The Signature Chaise Deep is rated by Ledge for 0–15 inches on a flat placement. Compare it especially when the water exceeds 9 inches and you want a fixed recline. For 0–9 inches, also compare the lower-profile standard Chaise.

Verified dimensions are 74 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 31 inches high, with a 63.5-inch footprint. It weighs 60 pounds empty and 270 pounds filled.

Deep is a separate model, not an extension of the standard Chaise range. The offer is one Signature Chaise Deep. A headrest pillow, shade, side table or bundle components, and a riser are not included unless an exact separate offer says otherwise and compatibility is verified.

If readings fall between 9 and 10 inches

A flat ledge with readings between 9 and 10 inches can fall within Signature Chaise Deep’s 0–15-inch rating. The standard Chaise and base Chair remain limited to 0–9 inches. Do not round or average readings; confirm every reading fits the selected model and check its footprint. For upright seating in this interval, compare the Autograph Chair, rated for up to 12 inches. Using Signature Chair beyond 9 inches: Chair Riser

The Signature Chair Riser is a separate supporting product for the Signature Chair only. It is not a chaise accessory.

Its verified labeled depth options are:

• 10–12 inches;
• 12–15 inches;
• 15–18 inches;
• 18–20 inches.

The labels meet at 12, 15, and 18 inches. This guide does not assign an exact boundary reading to either neighboring option. Stop and request current configuration guidance at those boundaries or whenever readings span two labels.

The Riser is sold separately; the Chair is not included. Do not use it with the Signature Chaise, Signature Chaise Deep, or Signature Lowback Chair.

Armrest Console: compatibility does not change depth

The Signature Chaise Armrest Console is verified for the Signature Chaise and Signature Adjustable Reclining Chaise/ARC. It is not designed for the Signature Chair or Signature Chaise Deep.

The Console is sold separately. It does not extend the standard Signature Chaise beyond its verified 0–9-inch range.

Will two loungers and a table fit on my sun shelf?

Plan the whole arrangement, including the space you want to move through. For two standard Signature Chaises placed side by side, start with this width calculation:

46 inches is only the combined width of the two chaises. It is not a minimum ledge width or a complete fit recommendation. A table, gaps between pieces and room to get in and out all need additional space.

Mark the complete arrangement on your plan, then check normal water depth and the flat supporting area for every piece. 5. Confirm footprint and site clearance

Measure the usable flat length and width, then compare them with the exact product dimensions and footprint.

Note any nearby ledge edges, steps, transitions, walls, returns, drains, or other obstructions.
